Obama Makes History

(by Theodore Pigott, special correspondent)

History was made in America this fall when Barack Obama was elected the forty-fourth president of the United States. Obama is the first African-American ever to hold this position. A Democrat, Obama defeated the Republican John McCain on November 5, as large numbers of Americans turned out to vote in this important election.

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961, to a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas. His parents divorced a few years later. Obama's mother then remarried and moved the family to Indonesia, where Obama went to a public school until he turned ten. He was then brought back to Hawaii by his mother. A few years after graduating from Columbia University, Obama decided to move to Chicago, where he worked as a community organizer. He then went to Harvard Law School before becoming involved in politics.

As a junior senator from the State of Illinois, Obama was largely unknown until he gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Called "The Audacity of Hope," this speech electrified the crowd and made Obama a national figure overnight. Many, however, were still surprised that he chose to run for the presidency three years later, since Hillary Clinton seemed the likely Democratic candidate at that time. Obama defeated Hillary in this primary race before going on to beat McCain in the general election this November.

When Obama's victory was announced, spontaneous celebrations erupted not only across the United States but also around the world, with people singing and dancing in the streets in Harlem and Kenya and even in a town called Obama in Japan. In Chicago, more than 300,000 people gathered to hear Obama speak. Many, including the TV star Oprah Winfrey and the civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, were in tears as they celebrated this historic moment and listened to Obama speak.

In this speech, Obama was serious about challenges that America faces, calling them "the greatest of our lifetime—two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century." However, just as he had done in his campaign, Obama offered Americansand the world"hope" and "change." As Obama said that night: "In this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America."
